Commanding Officer- Ensign Michelle Azpiri, NSCC:
Ensign Azpiri has been involved with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps since June 2018 as part of the Mason DDG87 Division and Training Ship Mason DE-529. Her decision to join the unit was during the second year of her two youngest children’s time in the program. She started as an Admin Officer and within 9 months of being in the program she was promoted to Executive Officer. She served as the Executive Officer for 1 year until her current appointment as Commanding Officer.
Since 2013, she has held the position of Executive Assistant & Office Manager for a division of Apple Leisure Group. Prior to her position at Apple Leisure, she was Corporate Controller for 9 years.
She also owns an investment company “Azpiri Family Investments” where she buys real estate, renovates, and provides affordable housing to the community. She has participated in many charities and fundraising events over the past 25+ years.
Ensign Azpiri is also a newly appointed Officer of the Navy League of Philadelphia and is a member of the Board of Directors.
Ensign Azpiri is originally from New York City and comes from a military family (Army, Air Force, and Navy). She is a proud mother of 4 children, one of which is an U.S. Navy Sailor. She is very passionate about providing opportunities to the youth of our future, while advocating for the Navy League. She is dedicated to helping build a better future for the sea service personnel, their families, and youth programs.
Executive Officer-Instructor Jeff Shannon, NSCC:
Instructor Shannon has been a volunteer Instructor with the US Naval Sea Cadets since August of 2019 when his son joined the Mason Division. He is a 1996 graduate of Drexel University where he majored in Operations Management. He first worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing and then joined the construction industry where he has 20+ years’ experience managing and consulting on various civil / infrastructure projects including a new port facility on the Delaware River, a US Army airfield, and a Veterans cemetery.
Instructor Shannon also serves as the Vice President of US Navy League – Philadelphia Council and actively serves in various committees at his church and children’s school. He is an avid runner and finished the Marine Corps Marathon in 2017 and 2019. Instructor Shannon is a Philadelphia native and also lived in the central mountains of Colorado for two years.
